Lecturer/Sr. Lecturer, CPSJ Programs: MPS, NCJCC, etc. (Faculty Wage)

The Center for Public Safety and Justice (CPSJ) in the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) seeks applications for one or more non-tenure track, part-time (faculty wage) lecturer position(s) to teach in the Master of Public Safety (MPS), the National Criminal Justice Command College (NCJCC), and related programs beginning Fall 2025. The MPS is an online program. The NCJCC is an intensive in-person and/or hybrid program for mid-to-upper-level law enforcement leaders. Both programs focus on leadership, innovation, communication engagement, and collaboration.

Required Education:
  • A master’s or terminal degree (e.g., MA, MS, MPA) from an accredited institution in public affairs, criminal justice, or related field is required. A terminal degree (PhD, JD) is preferred.


Required Experience:
  • At least 3 years of leadership experience in policing/criminal justice
  • At least 3 years of teaching/training experience in policing/criminal justice
  • Curriculum development experience
  • Experience with online and intensive police/criminal justice training/education programs
  • Willingness to learn and stay current with teaching strategies and technologies


Preferred Experience:
  • 5+ years of chief executive experience in policing/criminal justice
  • 5+ years of higher education teaching experience in policing/criminal justice
  • Experience teaching graduate students online
  • Relevant industry certifications and/or professional memberships
  • Proficiency using Canvas or similar LMS platforms


Successful candidates will have extensive public safety leadership experience and expertise, as well as relevant graduate school education and evidence of current/recent professional experience. Successful candidates will likely have backgrounds similar to/consistent with existing MPS faculty biographies . Public safety subject area needs include leadership, Constitutional framework, emergency preparedness, community dialogue, budgeting, and human resources. Successful candidates will teach one or more MPS core courses . Individuals with specific expertise in timely topical areas (e.g., AI, immigration, etc.) may also be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
